@Naeem,
Since you do lots of text/emails, a keyboard phone is a right choice. Personally I have been carrying a laptop in my backpack since a decade, but with iPhone, for the first time I felt that I did not need a laptop and got freedom from laptop. Some internet features in the iPhone are so convenient that I even skip walking to my iMac in other room.
Regarding modem functionality, we also get a free roaming WiFi account in the UK when we get iPhone contract. You can find a hotspot almost anywhere in UK and you can use your iPhone WiFi account on your laptop directly. While outside UK, I pair my W890i with my MacBook through BT and use any cheap prepaid connection.
Touchscreens have been there since ages but I believe iPhone is still the only one which is fully usable by fingers and no stylus is required, which makes is very natural and convenient. This was all made possible due to the genius minds who developed Mac OSX.
iPhone OS and user interface is king, but I decided to get a Nokia E71 (much nicer than the E61 shown) because I needed to do a lot of typing (email, text, etc.), and I wanted to use it as a modem for my laptop and for voip. I believe these features are unavailable / blocked on iphones? Also, isn’t there an issue with unlocked iphone, i.e. that you can’t upgrade the software?
Nokia, Blackberry and Palm also have touch screen contenders now.
