Another episode of Soundbyte and Jehan Ara and I have Sameer Qureshi in the studios with us – Sameer works at Intel Corp in the Valley but was down in Karachi for a short winter break when Jehan Ara invited him to the studio. We had an interesting discussion about the role youngsters can play in taking Pakistan to where it needs to go.
We covered a number of topics including entreprenuership, innovation and well, Pakistanis working out there in the world!

[...] can hear Sameer talk to Rabia and me about his job at Intel in the Valley – he is a software programmer in a hardware firm. You will also [...]
Thanks for this, Ahad – Please note that I’m allowing the comment to go through this time but please be careful what you write. Sameer and the other people who come by are welcome to speak their mind based on their outlook and experience, and we encourage them to do so. I realize you make some of your commentary in jest, but here’s a rule we follow – You are welcome to be as critical as you want – Just don’t poke fun at anyone’s expense and certainly don’t undermine any of the work that people are doing – not on this site. You are welcome to send one of us an email in private and say what you like. Thanks again.
ok its working fine in IE8
i think there is a problem in my FF 3.0.5
@Sameer: I know how it works in the States, they like professionals that know their work in one particular subject; be it Rails, UI Design, J2EE, POSIX, etc. etc.
Having said that it you are right it depends on the company, but ill tell you that high end companies want AGILE teams of developers, architects, etc etc to take care of core tasks.
Back home to a little php? Man you work for intel I’d think you could do a little better than that!! haha -> go for command line frameworks (Rails or if you like php then Zend)
Yes there is no quality of IT here in Pakistan. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO SOME ATTENTION.
=> You think we need to redo the educational system, i think you have a point, BUT => WE NEED TO REDO THE WAY WE THINK AS HUMANS FIRST. Dude anyone can learn, its all there at our fingertips (THE WEB DUOH!!) We are not a research orientated people(and thats a shame!!)
Having said that those big professionals out there here in Pakistan can help by explaining to youngsters these points:
- Spend the time to learn the job well.
- Gain the deep statisfaction of doing the job.
- Give back to the community/share your knowledge with others.
Alas how can they explain this if MOST aren’t practicing it already..
@Jahanara: The reason why people are so underpaid here is because they go into companies without much knowledge. Unfortunately there are not many pros so they are forced into this situation. The companies themselves are not looking for pros, cuz either they feel *******threatened or they don’t want to PAY FOR QUALITY WORK.
SO YOU YOUNGSTERS DO NOT BE EXPLOITED BY BIG COMPANIES. LEARN YOUR WORK AND LEARN IT WELL.
MY ADVICE IS TO SURE BE A JACK OF ALL TRADES, BUT **FOCUS ON ONE ASPECT AND KICK A** IN THAT!!!!
Trust me…
@sumair,
The 3 programs … Today in Tech, Soundbytes & News Update are in audio MP3 format, the rest are FLV encoded videos … more details here:
http://webstudio.ciopakistan.com/programs/
If you have some downloading utility or realplayer installed, it will download the file as MP3, which is perfectly fine.
Hmmm… What browser do you have? I have checked it in multiple browsers and I don’t seem to be getting any errors.. Is anyone else getting the error? Wait – Are you using Chrome by any chance?
yah still getting it..
is it an audio file??….because my downloader downloads an audio file of conversation….
From a strictly programming perspective, he’s doing better work as compared to what even a J2EE/.Net architect does here…
According to Linus Torvalds:
“…., when men were men and wrote their own device drivers”

Web dev, Web 2.0, mobile dev and the internet/WWW economy is all very appealing, getting it done technically is not much of a problem.
Sameer is living in a world where every byte and every CPU cycle matters… the world has relied upon Russian, Bulgarian, Irish and American programmers for that.
So Sameer, if you are thinking about the web from a business point of view, good enough, you need not worry about PHP, its engine was written by someone who was not happy with CGI
Good luck to you!
@Szad – Are you still getting the error? I checked again and haven’t had a problem.. Is anyone else having a problem (with this clip)?
i am getting error #2032
Great going Sameer! We need more of our expats to get involved in the local Business and Tech arena.
