1 – 1818 1st steam-vessel to sail Great Lakes launched.
2 - 1959 Monkeys Able and Baker zoom 300 mi (500 km) into space on Jupiter missile, animals become the first living creatures to survive a space flight after they were sent up into space by America.
3 – 1971 U.S.S.R. Mars 3 launched 1st spacecraft to soft land on Mars.
4 - 1998 Nuclear testing: Pakistan responds to a series of Indian nuclear tests with five of its own, prompting the United States, Japan, and other nations to impose economic sanctions.
5 – 2002 The Mars Odyssey finds signs of large ice deposits on the planet Mars.
