Sania Saeed, an amazingly popular, extremely versatile actor on Pakistan’s television and theater scene, dropped by the CIO Pakistan WebStudio to interact with a few bloggers! Katha, Sania’s theater group, is doing a play from June 6th to the 9th at the Karachi Arts Council as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club. So Jehan Ara, Fariha Akhtar, Sana Saleem, Jamash and I quizzed her and asked her loads of questions about everything from theater, performances, the local drama scene, censorship to so many others topics of discussion.
While she was here, we figured we might as well also recorded an expanded session of In The Line Of Wire and have Sania and Shehzad Qureshi from the Rotary (also of Tohfay.com fame!) talk about their work and let the blogosphere know how we can help!
Here’s the much awaited video!!!

[...] Two very different types of people, working towards a common goal – to inspire and make a change. She is doing well.
CIA or CIO??
BTW nice episode!
And its really great to have a blend of main stream media and bloggers together for a cause!
Secondly, I strongly agree to Sania for our identity theft by “English”
Really great discussion. I am really loving Sania’s Views!
O! Atlast sorry for commenting so late!
@Rabia Ma’am,
Understood and very well said
My rant about the meetup http://sanasaleem.com/2009/06/06/sania-saeeds-main-adakara-banun-gi/ posted it at a couple of other places including Global voices ! hope more people turn up
@Muneeb – We’ve been working on it for a while and I’m sure with the hype that the bloggers have created, coupled with the blogger meetups that we’ve been carrying out, more people will initiate various ideas…
You can air the performance, but perhaps not live. At least not until there is enough of a culture for performers to actually feel the need to be webcast to an even LARGER audience.. But perhaps once the performance has finished, they can put it up in an aggregate location and plug in some advertising for it to continue raise funds.
But more than even that, since we have creative film producers coming out of ears, why can’t one performance be used to extract all sorts of content which supports the main theater act.. Get the director to do a ‘directors cut’ or the lights guys to come and talk about how lighting was such a challenge for this and why… As they say, there is more than one way to ‘skin a goat’.
We spoke to Sania to do something different after the play is over, so let’s hope that comes through!
@Rabia; Very True
but seriously convey ma words to record the theater seriously don’t you think we should actually start airing the theater’s as well? like it never happened but why? like it’s never too late.. I heard where Sania said that theater per telifilms huty hay but let’s see how the audience response when we actually air the theater’s as well, beside just think about the awareness and people who will like the story will definitely try to go to watch it live nahin?

@Muneeb – We’d like not to be forced to do many things, but we can’t be living in an ideal world (though ummm… many of us actually ENJOY the grueling work schedules!) – Theater and other forms of the Arts, are meant for leisure.
@Faisal.k – Similar to the dismal turnout at conferences which are actually MEANT to drive economic activity, if many people won’t even bother going to THOSE, can we really expect them to go to a leisure activity? Regardless of how exhausting a work or school day is, if we don’t exercise a certain amount of empathy and go to demonstrate our support and represent our teams or communities, then well, we should be VERY concerned. And while we’re busy being concerned, since we are bright enough to identify what the problem is, then we should realize the power we each have to work together to change that.
@Talha – I am going to kill you now!
Faisal I see where you are coming from but you had to be there to understand that Sania didn’t mean to offend. In fact she asked us what blogging was and tried to understand why we did what we did. And, quite honestly, she was impressed with the time and energy bloggers spend by taking up causes and doing what mainstream media sometimes lack. In fact, she said to us that we seemed to have a special DNA which should be injected into a lot more people. And remember she was there because she recognized that bloggers could carry the message to a different – mostly younger – audience. I guess all that didn’t come out in the show.
I think, like Rabia said, it is only by bringing all types of people together, will there be a better understanding and a kind of synergy that will positively impact both.
BTW Faisal, Sania does use technology – mostly email, sms and internet surfing.
@Faisal.k Well, Sania wasn’t supposed to know about bloggers.. The entire point of the exercise was simply to make the two ‘fields’ talk. Like you yourself pointed out, the ‘chasm’ between the two… its a LOT more than just a gap or a space.
I had originally invited her just to talk to a few bloggers.. Because Jehan Ara was already there conducting ITLOW shows, we thought why not take the opportunity and get her on the show with everyone. I’m sure if theater-goers see this, they’d be like, “why the hell is a technology show highlighting theater when they know nothing about it” because we’re not the domain experts. I hardly think she was insecure – if anything, her parting comments to us offline were something along the lines of, “I didn’t know this world existed, but will be more conscious of it.”
Once domain experts from across fields can collaborate together to promote something – in this case, some bloggers promote theater while actors talk about blogging to others in their field, this combination works.
Having said all that, thanks for the honesty!
All these experts I tell you!
@JA – Excellent episode!
@Rabia – The audio from microphone will obviously stay mono but should be center panned, instead of left.
Talha
Would be fun if we can have this play live on the web some where .. or something.. I would try my level best to come there and do a live one via qik.com let’s see
Also seriously there is so much these people can contribute if they can become regular blogger.
Like; just imagine an uncle who did phd have lod & lod of knowledge
“Theater pay time lagta hay”.. but what about the effect? like the gravity … like might be theater effect most but not every one goes to actually watch the theater nahin?
Oops… Fariha already ask myquestion was already asked in the shape of live streaming… but the point is might possible the blogger or the guy… can’t / don’t wanna go .. but don’t wanna miss the theater..
.. the “700″ wali e.g. is good but again.. when we talk about theater we some time’s add the word of limited… and people have so many things to do or might be they are really busy and can’t avoid that thing but still they wan’t to watch the theater.
I understand the density of watching live must be unimaginable and you must make achi quality ki cheez priority and things but…
fyi.. (understood the live experience thingy)
but honestly.. if I was not forced to go to office and was not forced to go to university would love my self to go to the play

Muneeb
An extremly thought provoking web cast albeit a very patronizing one as far as Sania was concerned.
Not wanting to be a downer but if the blogging community with their “technological wish wash” as it was termed is interested and takes the time out to meet one of our theaters most versatile performers do you think they should be spoken to in this manner or that the person in question shouldn’t take 10 minutes out of her day to read what blogging is?
No offense but it seemed like the personality in question had no clue of what blogging is neither was aware of the impact it can achieve quite visible in comments like “no theatre tu bahut log dekhne waisey hi aarahe hain” Really? Cuz the last time i was at a play in the arts council there weren’t many people there. In fact even the great kara film fest i attended had about 20 people sitting in a theater with 200 seats easily.
Although ye “kagaz pencil wale log hain” sooner or later they will realize what tech its all about and also the fact that blogging in Pakistan is quite at par with the western worlds version of it and not light years behind.
I wish our actors and actresses did not feel so insecure about the fact that they lack the basic skills necessary to plug a good show through any media available specially free media like blogging.
Really great work by Rabia and Jehan ara but to me this only served to highlight the chasm between the two very different communities.
Rawk on blaggers!!
A different ITLOW episode but a very enjoyable and nice one..
I wish I had attended the meet…And had the ice cream…
@ Rabia You r too evil ! hmph , even ma’am Jehan agrees with the icecream part
I loved doing it. Hey Rabia maybe in some of the future shows we can have a co-host. It is so much fun. And that guarantees you provide ice-cream

@MystaKool – fascinating observation, young man! From the entire hour of video, I’m thrilled that THAT was the THAT point you picked up! Kewl!
Very nicely done, however… I just happened to notice that the audio for the program was mono, whereas the title (start and end) was in stereo…
