IT sector: PCA and Microsoft to promote IPRs: Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) and Microsoft have joined hands, in a consultative meeting, to efforts to promote Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the industry to ensure healthy and steady growth in the IT sector. The meeting focused on consumer awareness regarding the IPRs and facilitation of the industry to provide affordable software to the end-users in Pakistan. Both the sides agreed that the proposed awareness campaign would include countrywide seminars, informative literature and special training as effective tools of communication. Munawar Iqbal, Central President PCA, suggested that the proposed awareness campaigns for promotion of IPRs ought to be stipulated with facilitation and incentive for the industry so that the equilibrium related to cost-effectiveness and affordability could be maintained.

Southern Punjab: Zardari launches broadband internet project: President Asif Ali Zardari has launched a project to provide broadband internet in Southern Punjab funded by Universal Service Fund (USF) worth Rs 1.95 billion. President desired for their early completion of the project after being briefed by Naguibullah Malik, Secretary IT. This project (being implemented through PTCL and Worldcall) involves providing broadband facilities to unserved population of 4.4 million, residing in 38 cities of Southern Punjab. Also, About 101,500 broadband connections will be provided including provision of broadband facilities in 388 higher secondary schools, colleges and libraries through the establishment of Educational Broadband Centres.

Microsoft committed to solving business challenges faced by SMEs: Microsoft Pakistan in collaboration with Maison Consulting and Solutions held an interactive seminar, named “Reduce cost with Dynamics ERP and CRM in tough financial times,” to address the importance of having a proficient ERP System for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The seminar highlighted importance of using IT solutions to reduce costs and operational inefficiencies especially during the current resource crunch. Kamal Ahmed, Country Manager Microsoft Pakistan, while addressing audience, said, “Microsoft is committed to solving business challenges faced by SMEs. Investment in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) can allow firms better productivity which will lead to better profitability, market share and customer service.” CEO Maison Consulting, Sultan Hamdani said, “With the turbulent times affecting most large and small corporations, ERP solutions have become the need of the hour.”
