Abbas Ali Khan started his career off an animator, went onto starting his own company and then used his technical background and passion for music into launching his singing career. Abdullah Haroon interviews Abbas about the singer’s perception of music and technology, the purity of sound, classical versus pop music and how the artist’s background in technology has helped him to make a niche for himself.

@Rafique, Nawazish Rafique sahab, this i think is a misconception that indian classical has not travelled outside of the subcontinent, yes its correct that it has a niche but abroad even this niche is quite huge because of the population. we obviously cant compare classical with pop but then it totally depends on the individual if he wants to achieve.
@Irum Hussain, Irum the singles will be more song like with an acoustic arrangement, easy listening with light yet meaningful lyrics whereas the album will be based on classical and semi classical pieces, i.e bandish and thumri fused with some western instruments but dont expect it to be like buddah bar , nirvana lounge or massive attack, this will be a new sound all together more inclined toward eastern than western.
@rabia garib, well more than pakistan classical music is appreciated in europe, US, sri lanka, india, afghanistan and bangladesh
@Abbas Ali Khan, Is that local, overseas or is there no difference where your audience tunes into you?
@Irum Hussain, @Abbas Ali Khan And here’s me adding a question to this – how do you deal with copyright issues online, Abbas? Isn’t a riff or style only a click away from being copied?
@Karen, Salaams Karen! Thanks for taking the time to watch the show… as they say, music has no boundaries! Yay internet!
@Imran Hanif, Interesting question, Imran! So Abbas! I’m not sure about the others but I’ve seen Malal and Sun Re with you IN the videos… How much does perfection get in the way of just shooting and getting the video done and over with? It’s not like you can get irritated at the singer, or camera or editor since in some places, it’s all you!!
Very good sir jee! Inspirational!
Great show! I’m not very well versed in Urdu so I may have missed parts but LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED the tone of what I heard… The end clip is very cool. If you weren’t already a rockstar, I would have submitted your voice to some of the sound studios here in LA!!
Will try and get a friend who I think might be more fluent in the language and watch this all over again! Thanks for sharing!
Hey! Saw the link on Facebook and thought I’d come in to see. I’ve been following your music on and off for a while but since I work outside of Pakistan, the web is really the only way to stay in touch with the local ongoings.
I just had a question about the fact that you have a background and experience in Post production. How tough is it to produce your own music video being infront and behind the camera, and perhaps even during the post production phase? It’s tough to try and be a perfectionist in one area.. you seem to be involved in ALL areas!
Thanks! Looking forward to some more great music from you!
@Abbas Ali Khan, Thank you! I actually wasn’t expecting a response this quick but then I shouldnt be surprised!! You are on a Web channeL so you must have been expecting people to comment and watch!
What kind of albums or songs or singles are we to expect from you?
@Irum Hussain, @Irum Hussain, Irum technology has already taken over most of the younger lot already have basic studios at home, most of the pakistani music that you hear has come out of these studio
thank you very much i hope you will like my upcoming music as well
@Latif Khanani, Thank you latif, my fans are taking it positively, my music always had a classical touch to it, plus classical performance is something i will do parallel to my pop or fusion music so basically ill now cater to a bigger audience and hopefully have a bigger fan base
Thank you very much
I am sure you’re all waiting for Abbas to start responding to your questions, which he will soon. Please bear with the delay as he’s a little busy at the moment. Regards.
What a brilliant voice! I am in my mid 60′s and I cannot tell you how much better my day is after hearing you. My first time to this website and my first time listening to Abbas. I feel a great deal of happiness and pride.
How has the response been from non-Pakistani audiences? Audiences that are perhaps not familiar with eastern classical genres? You mention that a lot of people listen to you for the first time on facebook, which speaks volumes about the reach the web has. Unfortunately very little pure Eastern Classical music has traveled outside of the subcontinent apart of fused tracks. Do you think people there have the pallette to appreciation eastern classical as young talent such as you comes up to perform it?
This is very interesting. Being a student of technology and also someone who is passionate about music and singing, this is very inspiring.
I want to ask Abbas what he thinkgs about the fact that if there is so much technology available, shouldn’t more youngsters be able to launch themselves through the internet? Less than 500 dollars he says is what it could cost to produce very good quality sound, which isn’t that much for the kind of money youngsters spend on mobile phones and laptops. This might become a focused investment that will give positive returns in the long run.
Does Abbas see this as the kind of a future for pop music in Pakistan?
I am a BIG FAN of your voice. Lovely clip at the end of the show! Loved it!!
Wonderful! I have heard a song or two of Abbas and have been very impressed with the quality of his vocals. Now that I know all this, I have more reason to become a fan!
However, I’m wondering how his fan following reacts to the fact that a pop artist is focusing more on classical, since I’d imagine the audience for both to be different. Does he foresee a problem?
Keep up the great work Abbas! Thrilled to see someone so young having such a mature outlook on the fusion of music.
fresh artists like him should make it in our music industry, there is a dire need of promotion of such mature music..there should be something for everyone! the older generation cant always sway and live up to old songs from indian movies!
